Darren Law Finishes 2nd at Watkins Glen 6 Hours to Lead CDOC World Team Drivers
June 7, 2008 — Watkins Glen, NY —
CDOC World Team Driver Darren Law claimed his best result of the 2008 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series season Saturday, finishing 2nd overall in the #59 Brumos Porsche Daytona Prototype with co-driver David Donohue. Law and Donohue nearly took the victory at the classic endurance event, leading the race frequently, but the winning Lexus-Riley of Scott Pruett had enough pace over the final 18-lap sprint to the finish to outdistance the Brumos Porsche.
"Traffic was a little tough," Darren said. "We seemed to always lose a little on the restarts, but it's still a good result. I was surprised I got loose even going up the hill. On the last restart Scott (Pruett) got a good jump and I just couldn't catch up to him. But the Brumos team did a great job and Porsche provided us an excellent engine."
CDOC World Team Drivers Mark Wilkins and Brian Frisselle put together a solid 7th place finishing effort at Watkins Glen, finishing on the lead lap, as fourth through seventh positions at the finish were separated by less than one second. Wilkins and Frisselle are now tied for 8th in the Daytona Prototype championship with six races in the book and eight left to run.
Burt Frisselle, Gabriele Gardel and Richard Antinucci didn’t have such a stellar race in the #47 CDOC-sponsored Ford Dallara. The weekend started well enough with fast practice times and a qualifying time good for 14th on the 45-car starting grid. Running in the top-10 during the first hour and a half of the race, the team was anticipating a good finish when Gardel went off into the gravel trap and damaged the underside of the car. Although the crew was able to get the car going again, the damage proved more extensive that at first thought and, with Antinucci in the car, the fuel cell started leaking. The resulting fire caused extensive damage to the rear of the car and resulted in a DNF. The car was credited with a 19th-place finish in DP, 39th overall.
"It's a shame what happened because the crew did a tremendous job all weekend and we had a really fast car that was easily capable of running with the leaders," said Frisselle, who scored a 2nd-place finish in this event in 2004. "The car is badly damaged, but we're hoping to be able to make the next race at Mid-Ohio in two weeks. It's going to take a lot of all-nighters by the Doran crew to get it done, but they're the best and if anyone can do it, they can. I'd also like to say that we really enjoyed working with Richard Antinucci in his first race with our team and hope to do more with him in the future."
