CDOC Launches Contingency Sponsorship of Inaugural Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup
April 27, 2008 — Alton, VA —
CDOC announced today its contingency of an innovative and high-profile new one-make racing series, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Series. The Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series is an innovative approach to motorsports – 30 factory-prepared and managed 2009 clean-diesel Jetta TDIs will be piloted by talented, up-and-coming drivers, aged 16 to 26. Volkswagen’s goal is to find the driver with the most talent and help them break into the world of professional motorsports. The Jetta TDI Cup series, the first all clean-diesel race series, is sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing Inc. At stake for the series champion is $100,000 in cash and $250,000 in sponsorship for a ride in a professional series, provided the winner drives a Volkswagen, Audi or Porsche in competition.
CDOC offers contingency payouts of $200 for 1st place, $150 for 2nd, $125 for 3rd and $50 for 10th place, and is pleased to announce that in the worldwide debut of the Jetta TDI Cup, all three podium finishers were participants in the contingency program. Mark Pombo, of Duluth, GA, won the inaugural 30-minute sprint race, taking the checkered flag just 4/10ths of a second ahead of second placed finisher Derek Jones of Philadelphia, PA. Jimmy Underhill, of Denver, CO rounded out the podium.
One of the unique aspects of the racing series, as it is intended to both promote Volkswagen clean diesel and assist young racers advance their Motorsports careeers, is that Volkswagen will bring in one veteran racer per event to help advise Cup drivers on each circuit and the profession of racing. For the inaugural event at VIR, longtime NASCAR racer Wally Dallenbach Jr. was guest instructor.
CDOC founder Colin Dougherty said, “We’re thrilled to be working closely with the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Series because it supports what CDOC does – grassroots and enthusiast-based Motorsport. Volkswagen has made a great commitment not only to driver development but also to ‘greening up’ Motorsport with its clean diesel technology, and at CDOC, we hope to make friends and customers out of the participants. We have a great relationship with the SCCA, who sanctions the Jetta TDI Cup Series, so working with Volkswagen is a natural for us.”
